How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal uses a highly concentrated pulsating beam of light to remove unwanted hair. The laser beam targets the hair follicle and, once absorbed, the energy from the laser is converted to heat, which then destroys the hair follicle. The surrounding skin is left unharmed, as the laser specifically targets the dark pigments of the hair. The procedure requires multiple sessions, as hair grows in cycles and the laser is only effective on actively growing hairs. It typically takes anywhere from 6-8 sessions, spaced several weeks apart, to achieve optimal results. At Take It Off Tattoo Removal & Alt Spa, we offer affordable and efficient laser hair removal services for all people, so you can enjoy long-lasting smooth skin.

  • The Alma Harmony XL SHR (Super Hair Removal) is a state-of-the-art hair removal technology that combines both laser and IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) technologies to provide safe, effective, and comfortable hair reduction treatments. SHR is an innovative approach to hair removal that gradually heats the hair follicles, reducing hair growth with minimal discomfort.

Here's how Alma Harmony XL SHR works:

    1. Selective Photothermolysis: The SHR technology targets melanin, the pigment responsible for hair color. When the laser or IPL energy is absorbed by the melanin in the hair follicles, it converts into heat. This selective photothermolysis ensures that the energy is primarily absorbed by the hair follicles, leading to their gradual destruction while minimizing damage to surrounding tissues.

    2. In-Motion™ Technology: The Alma Harmony XL SHR uses In-Motion™ technology, which is a unique approach to hair removal. Instead of delivering high energy levels in a single pulse, In-Motion™ technology delivers multiple lower fluence pulses over a larger treatment area. The handpiece is moved continuously over the skin in a sweeping motion, ensuring even coverage and consistent heating of the hair follicles.

    3. Rapid Repetition Rate: The SHR technology allows for a high repetition rate of pulses (up to 10 Hz), which means that the pulses are delivered rapidly. This ensures that the hair follicles receive a gradual build-up of heat rather than a single high-energy pulse, making the treatment more comfortable for the patient.

    4. Cooling Mechanism: To enhance patient comfort and protect the surrounding skin, the Alma Harmony XL SHR handpiece is equipped with an advanced cooling mechanism. It cools the skin during the treatment, counteracting the heating effect of the laser or IPL energy and reducing any potential discomfort.

    5. Hair Growth Stages: Hair follicles go through different growth stages, including anagen (active growth), catagen (transitional), and telogen (resting). Since hair removal is most effective during the anagen phase, multiple treatment sessions are typically required to target hair in different growth stages effectively.

    6. Gradual Hair Reduction: The gradual heating of the hair follicles with SHR technology leads to a progressive reduction of hair growth. After each treatment session, the targeted hair follicles are damaged, leading to slower regrowth and finer, lighter hair.

How many sessions will I need?

At Take It Off Tattoo Removal & Alt Spa, we use state-of-the-art laser technology to remove unwanted hair safely and effectively. The number of treatments needed for laser hair removal varies depending on a variety of factors, including the color and thickness of the hair, the location of the hair on the body, and the client's skin type. On average, most clients require 6-8 sessions, spaced 4-6 weeks apart, to achieve the desired level of hair reduction. However, some clients may require more or fewer sessions to see optimal results. During a consultation with our experienced technicians, we will assess your unique needs and create a personalized treatment plan to help you achieve the best results possible.

Before Treatment Instructions

  • Make sure the treatment area is shaved prior to your appointment for best results. Please note that clients are required to shave prior to their appointment, otherwise they will be charged $25 if our techs need to shave you (due to supplies and ultimately the time it takes to do so)

  • Avoid tanning, sun exposure, AND self tanner for at least 4 weeks before your appointment.

  • Avoid taking certain medications and antibiotics for at least 2 weeks prior to treatment.

Photosensitizing medications: Certain medications can make your skin more sensitive to light and increase the risk of adverse reactions during laser treatment. Examples include isotretinoin (Accutane), tetracycline antibiotics, fluoroquinolone antibiotics, and some nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These medications may need to be discontinued for a specific period before undergoing laser hair removal.

Herbal supplements and alternative remedies: Some herbal supplements and alternative remedies can also increase photosensitivity. St. John's wort, for example, is known to make the skin more sensitive to light and should be avoided before laser treatments.

Topical retinoids: Retinoids like tretinoin (Retin-A) and adapalene (Differin) can increase skin sensitivity and may need to be discontinued prior to laser hair removal. Your dermatologist will guide you on when to stop and resume using these medications.

During treatment expectations

Minimal Pain

Many people describe laser hair removal as feeling like a light pinch or snap of a rubber band.

Quick Treatment Times

The length of each session depends on the size of the treatment area, but most sessions are completed within 30 minutes to an hour.

No Downtime Needed

After your treatment, you can return to your daily routine with almost no downtime needed.

After getting laser hair removal, it's important to take care of your skin and avoid certain activities or products that could potentially irritate or damage the treated area. Here are some general no-nos:

  • Avoid direct sun exposure to the treated area for at least a couple of weeks following the procedure. The skin may be more sensitive and prone to sunburn. If you must be in the sun, use sunscreen with a high SPF and cover the treated area with clothing or a hat.

  • Avoid hot showers, baths, hot tubs, saunas, or any activity that could raise your body temperature significantly. Heat can cause discomfort and potentially worsen any temporary redness or swelling.

  • Refrain from using exfoliating products, scrubs, or aggressive physical exfoliation methods on the treated area for a few days to allow the skin to heal properly.

  • Avoid applying perfumes, scented lotions, or other potentially irritating products to the treated area, as they may cause irritation or allergic reactions.

  • Avoid wearing tight or restrictive clothing that may rub against the treated area and cause irritation.

  • Try to avoid vigorous exercise or activities that cause excessive sweating for a couple of days after treatment, as sweat can potentially irritate the treated skin.
